Electric Guitar String Gauges

A guitar string s gauge refers to the string s physical size given in inches.

These gauges are designated in thousandths of an inch. Extra light light medium however there are no set in stone definitions for any of these terms light strings on an electric guitar will have smaller gauges than light strings on an acoustic guitar. 0 009 strings also called 9 strings or nines have a top string that is 0 009 inches across in diameter while 0 011 strings usually referred to as 11 strings or elevens incorporate a top string that s 0 011 inches in diameter. These gauges are designated in thousandths of an inch.

Note though that different manufacturers include slightly different string gauges in their sets of strings. The most popular string gauge set for 6 string electric guitar is 010 046. String gauges string gauge refers to the size of the string as in how thick measured in thousandths of an inch. Electric guitar strings are manufactured in a range of thicknesses or gauges.

Typical set of extra super light electric strings 008 010 015 021 030 038 eight to thirty eights. The lightest strings are typically an 008 often referred to by guitarists as eights and the heaviest a 56 or fifty six. The 010 gauge string is the smallest referring to the first string and the 046 is the largest or sixth string. String gauges are usually referred to by the gauge of their lightest string.

And light strings for either can vary greatly between one manufacturer and another.
